Housebreaking Advice by Professional Pet Services

When a pet does not want to relieve itself in a new environment, it can be problematic when you are traveling. Some of them may try to keep it in for as long as possible, rather than go when you stop at a motel, a rest stop or at a dog show on the weekend. The dog can suffer discomfort or create serious health issues.

If you teach your puppy to go with a verbal command, like “go potty,” your pet will no longer be worrisome about relieving itself in an unfamiliar place. The puppy will be comfortable in public places if it hears the verbal command at home and meets praise for following through.

To make sure that new turf will smell familiar like the puppy’s home: Once your pet pees at home before you step out, use a paper towel to soak up a little of its urine and place the sample in a zip-loc bag. This should accompany you on your trips.

When you stop to have your pet go, pour a little water, maybe several tablespoons, into the bag and sprinkle the water in a 5 feet radius around the ground. The bag can be resealed and used again at other stops along the way.

After the bag has been put away, have your dog approach the area that you have sprinkled. Accompany him and keep him within the line of your sight. The dog will sniff around where you sprinkled the urine-water, will immediately recognize the odor of its own urine, and will be wondering why the place is unrecognizable. Make sure you praise your dog in a calm way when he is sniffing around and give him he verbal command. If the animal does its business, praise him softly and give it some more time to complete its business.

Take the Show on the Road

When your pet can potty while on a leash or in places where other dogs have roamed, it is ready for a series of short-lived trips, so that he can get accustomed to pottying in different locales.

Begin by taking your dog in your car to places that are about fifteen minutes to an hour from your home. Once you arrive at your destination, take him out for a nice walk with a leash. He should be allowed to sniff around in places where it is acceptable for him to relieve himself. If he spends more time sniffing in some spots than in others, it’s a good chance that other dogs have urinated there. Encourage your pet calmly to go as well and quietly praise him once he does. Go on car-rides to places that are friendly for dogs, like parks and other areas where your pet can sniff around and explore, while still on his leash. Always calmly praise your dog when he is sniffing so that he’ll know that is OK for other dogs to do their business there, and perhaps he will attempt to do the same. If relieves himself, praise him calmly and then let him have some time to continue sniffing. He just might do his business again.
